GoRacingTV to Broadcast Daily News Show from 2009 Runoffs
8/26/09
– ELKHART LAKE, Wis. –
GoRacingTV.com
will broadcast a daily Web-video news show from the Sports Car Club of
America National Championship Runoffs this year. The SCCA Runoffs will
be held at Wisconsin’s Road America, a 4.048-mile, 14-turn road course
located in Elkhart Lake, Wis. The show will air each of the six days of
the event, Sept. 22 to 27.
This will be another first for the
Maryland-based production company. GoRacingTV.com recently went to the
Chicago Region SCCA June Sprints and recorded all 10 races of the event
which presently are being aired one by one on its Web site. “We were
the first to bring the June Sprints to the club racing community via
Web-video and now we plan to be the first to bring the Runoffs to
everyone in a daily news format from the event,” said co-host Errol
Tucker. “Our goal is to make information on Club Racing more accessible
and help bring the sport to the forefront.”
The daily news
show will bring viewers news and information on what is happening at
the Runoffs; from informative interviews with competitors, to
qualifying interviews and updates, to the championship race results and
interviews with the winners. “It will be like looking at your local
news report each evening. Most people go home and look at the nightly
news to see what has gone on in the world today, in this case, with our
news report, viewers will get info on what has happened in the world of
SCCA and the Runoffs,” said Chip VanVurst, co-host of the show.
“Although
SCCA will have a live Web broadcast of the Runoffs championship races,
since our show will air each night of the qualifying days as well as
race days, we feel our news show will compliment their efforts by
giving viewers a quick and informative news format on what to look
forward to in the Championship races. We are still in the process of
solidifying the production schedule, but our plan right now is to have
each news show up on the GoRacingTV.com Web site by 8 p.m. EST each
evening,” said Tucker
GoRacingTV.com began airing episodes of
its “Club Racer” and “Auto Crosser” Web-based video shows in February
of this year and has quickly become the site where club racers can
obtain updated information and news related to the amateur racing
community.
GoRacingTV is looking for competitors with
interesting racing histories and or stories to interview at the
Runoffs. These interviews will be part of the News Show. If you know of
someone we should spotlight or if you think you have an interesting
story to share, please submit your/their contact information and racing
resume/bio at http://www.goracingtv.com/contact/
GoRacingTV.com
and its co-sponsors are enthused to be a part of this exciting project.

SCCA Runoffs to Have Live Flag-To-Flag Broadcast
on Internet!
8/21/09
– TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 21, 2009) – Sports
Car Club of America, Inc. announced today that every race from the 2009
SCCA National Championship Runoffs® will be broadcast live on the
Internet this September from Road America.
Beginning Friday,
Sept. 25 at 8:00 a.m. (CDT, GMT -6), all 24 races crowning the best
amateur racing drivers in America will be broadcast with flag-to-flag
coverage of the 14-turn, four-mile Road America circuit, featuring
expert commentary and post-race interviews. Each of the three race days
(Friday, Saturday and Sunday) will feature eight Championship races
from the 46th annual Runoffs, which culminates the 70-race SCCA Club
Racing National Racing Season.
Speedcast Productions will
exclusively carry the live action during race days through
SpeedcastTV.com, as well as on demand versions of each of the 24 races
with additional content after the event has concluded.
“We’re
very excited to once again have live coverage of the Runoffs,” SCCA VP
of Marketing and Communications Eric Prill said. “While we’re
disappointed that economic issues have ended our longtime run on SPEED
Channel for 2009, we believe that Speedcast Productions offers a
fantastic alternative. For the first time ever, the entire event can be
seen anywhere in the world live. Additionally, within a month of the
conclusion of the event, every race will be available for fans to watch
at any time, free of charge.”
Speedcast Productions has created
the most comprehensive and cost-effective video production and delivery
program in motorsports. Leveraging extensive live production
capabilities, powerful online tools and relationships throughout the
television industry, Speedcast has positioned itself on the cutting
edge of streaming video production.
Since its inception in 2006,
Speedcast has produced and delivered video coverage of over 60 road,
oval and kart races. In 2009, Speedcast made the debut of its
groundbreaking live webcasts with the Championship Karting
International series.
“As a former Runoffs competitor, I'm
incredibly excited to be involved with this great event,” Speedcast
President Clark Cambern said. “This is a unique and challenging event
to cover, but we look forward to bringing the live event to a worldwide
audience for the first time. At SpeedcastTV, we're committed to
delivering unique and compelling motorsports events to our viewers, and
the Runoffs is a perfect addition to our lineup.”
As has been
the case with previous Runoffs television coverage, Speedcast’s
broadcast will feature a full compliment of cameras around the Road
America racetrack to follow all of the action. The broadcast will
include both play-by-play and analysis separate from the event public
address system and post-race interviews. The on-demand versions of the
races will include enhanced interviews and in-car camera footage.
“Given
the changes in the economy over the last year and the proliferation of
streaming video and online content, this is a natural move for the
National Championship Runoffs,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert
said. “Fans can watch the event live, see it again and again on demand
and, if they so desire, buy the full event on DVD. What else could
anyone want?
“We would like to extend our thanks to the Road
America staff for being so gracious in facilitating SCCA and Speedcast
in this endeavor,” Dahnert added.
SCCA has a number of
advertising opportunities available within the broadcasts from graphic
billboards and 30-second spots to in-car camera placements, all at very
reasonable rates. For more information, please contact Melissa Flesher
at mflesher@scca.com or
800-770-2055.
As
always, SCCA is interested in compelling storylines for its Runoffs
public relations and broadcast efforts. Please submit information to RunoffsPR@scca.com.

SCCA Trans Am® Series
Returns in 2009
12/11/08 – ORLANDO, Fla. –
After a two-year hiatus since its last Champion was crowned, SCCA’s
Trans-Am® Series will return in 2009, with a planned eight-race
schedule for the series which held its first race in 1966.
Five
of the eight races were announced today at the Performance Racing
Industry show, in Orlando, Fla., as well as the series’ title sponsor
for 2009—Muscle Milk®.
A joint venture between Sports Car Club
of America, Inc. and subsidiary SCCA Pro Racing, the 2009 Muscle
Milk®
SCCA® Trans-Am® Series will consist of six events in
conjunction with
some of the biggest SCCA Club Racing events across the country,
creating powerhouse SCCA weekends, and two key professional events.
Technical rules will be based on the SCCA Club Racing GT-1 class.
“There
is a dedicated group of Trans-Am loyalists who have been working to
make this happen since our last licensing agreement to operate the
series expired in 2005,” SCCA President & CEO Jim Julow said. “The
re-birth of Trans-Am begins in 2009 with a grassroots-based series that
has the potential to grow in the coming years into a full professional
racing series.
“On behalf of SCCA and SCCA Pro Racing, I would
like to thank Jim Derhaag for his tireless efforts to help put some of
the critical pieces together and Muscle Milk for coming on board as
title sponsor to make the series a reality.”
The series will
begin its 42nd Championship season March 21-22 at Road Atlanta as part
of the Atlanta Region SCCA’s season-opening National race. The series
has previously visited Road Atlanta 12 times from 1973 through 2002,
with race winners including former series Champions Peter Gregg, Pete
Halsmer, Dorsey Schroeder, Tommy Kendall, Scott Pruett and Boris Said.
One
month later, April 17-19, the series heads from the rolling hills of
Georgia North to the rolling hills of Virginia, as part of North
Carolina Region’s Oak Tree Double National weekend at VIRginia
International Raceway. It is only the third time the historic series
has visited the historic racetrack, joining 1966 and 2002.
The
series treks north of the border May 15-17 to return to Mosport
International Raceway for the 25th time as part of the Victoria Day
Weekend with the SPEED World Challenge Championships—reuniting SCCA Pro
Racing’s top series from the last 20 years. Pruett won the last series
appearance at Mosport in 2003.
The series’ lone visit to the
left coast is a big one, joining the Rose Cup Festival June 12-14 at
Portland International Raceway. The huge, traditional event played host
to many Trans-Am Classic races, the last being in 1995, won by Ron
Fellows. From 1975-2005, the race circuit held 21 Trans-Am Series
races.
One month later, it’s back east to the Finger Lakes
Region’s National at historic Watkins Glen Raceway, July 11-12. From
1968-1998, The Glen held 25 Trans-Am Series races ranging from feature
events to participants in the 6 Hours of the Glen to the opening act
before the NASCAR Cup race.
Three additional races will be announced shortly.
“We’re
excited about the return of Trans-Am and are pleased to be able to give
something back to the series that has provided so much excitement for
race fans throughout the years,” said 1978 series Champion Greg
Pickett, founder of CytoSport Inc., the makers of Muscle Milk.
All
events are expected to be approximately 90 miles in length with no pit
stops. Races in conjunction with Club Racing events will have
qualifying and race sessions separate from the regular GT-1 competition
grouping, so drivers have the potential to run both the GT-1 Club
Racing event and the Trans-Am Series event on the same weekend.
History
The
Muscle Milk SCCA Trans-Am Series dates back to its first season in
1966. From 1966-1970, the series held a Championship to crown a
Manufacturers’ Champion. In 1971, a Drivers’ Championship was formally
adopted, with both Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships being
awarded through the 2005 season. The series was split into two classes
from 1976-1979, crowning Champions in each division. In 2006, two
additional races were held, although no Manufacturers’ Champion was
recognized.
Throughout the years, some of the greatest names in
motorsports have participated in the Trans-Am Series. Backdating the
Drivers’ Championship to the inaugural season, 30 different drivers
took titles, with multiple Championships being won by Paul Gentilozzi,
Tommy Kendall, Mark Donohue, Scott Pruett, Wally Dallenbach Jr., George
Follmer, Peter Gregg, Horst Kwech, Scott Sharp and Bob Tullius.
Gentilozzi leads all drivers, with 31 career wins.
SCCA both
owned and operated the Trans-Am Series, either internally or through
its SCCA Pro Racing subsidiary, from 1966 through 2000. In 2001, SCCA
began a series of outside licensing agreements for the series from
2001-2006. In its 41 seasons, the series held 446 separate races.
Regulations and Administration
Announcements
regarding regulations and series administration will be made shortly,
although technical regulations will be based on current GT-1 rules from
the Club Racing General Competition Rules (GCR) with additional
potential safety requirements.
Club Racing events will be
operated primarily by the individual SCCA Regions, with alterations to
the protest and appeals process to be similar to that of Pro Racing
events, managed by the SCCA National Staff. A dedicated technical
inspector will be at each Trans-Am Series event, regardless of Club or
Pro Racing sanction.
A series Web site is being established at www.sccatrans-am.com. Future
announcements will be placed there and at www.scca.com.

SCCA Announces Dues and Fees Changes
for 2009
12/09/08 – TOPEKA, Kan. –
The SCCA® Board of Directors finalized its 2009
fee structure for dues,
sanctions and insurance. While some areas of the business will
experience inflation, others will enjoy decreases.
“Overall, the
news is positive for active participants in SCCA,” SCCA President and
CEO Jim Julow said. “While there are some increases in our fees, we
have also found considerable savings on the insurance side that offset
these. The cost of running any business continues to rise, but we’ve
been able to find some relief for 2009, which is passed through
directly to Regions and our participants.
“Overall, the cost to Regions of running an event will not increase
from 2008 to 2009.”
Membership
dues will increase $5 from $60 to $65. Family dues will increase $6 to
$101, while spouse memberships will increase $3 to $23. This is the
first dues increase in three years. First Gear memberships remain
unchanged.
Fee increases were offset by a reduction in insurance
fees across the board. For the first time in several years, the
Club-wide insurance policy was put out to bid, with responses coming
from four different carriers.
Additional changes included:
Club Racing
- Increase Regional and National competition licenses by $5
- Elimination of distinction between spectator and non-spectator at a
flat rate of $1,400 for liability insurance
- Decrease Club Racing PA Insurance $5 per car to $28
- Decrease Driver School PA Insurance $3 per car to $19
- Decrease Time Trials/Hillclimb PA Insurance $3 and $4 per car,
respectively
Rally
- Increase RallyCross Sanction Fee from $3 to $3.50 per car
- Increase Road Rally Sanction Fee for Regional events from $2 to $4
per car
- Sanction fee for a 3-day or longer event changed to $500 per event
- Increase sanction fee for a charity event $20 to $70
- Decrease RallyCross Insurance fee $1 per car to $4
Solo
- Increase Regional Solo Sanction Fee from $3.75 to $4.50 per car
- Decrease Insurance $1 per car to $5
With
the changes, the Solo Department has made a policy change requiring
event audits to take place within two weeks from the end of the event.
Volunteer Incentive Programs remained unchanged from 2008.
A
full list of changes will be listed in the January 2009 Fastrack®
news.
Additional information about the implementation process and timeline
will be communicated at a later date.
SCCA Solo Nationals Move to Lincoln
11/11/08 – TOPEKA, Kan. –
After calling Topeka, Kan. home for the
last 14 years, the Tire Rack®
Solo National Championships will move to Lincoln, Nebraska’s Lincoln
Airpark in 2009.
The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships
have experienced tremendous growth, welcoming nearly 1,200 drivers,
making it the largest motorsport competition in the world. The success
of the event has been linked strongly to the central location,
hospitality of the Topeka community and excellent facilities offered by
both Forbes Field and Heartland Park Topeka. For 2009 however, it was
clear that the continued expansion would require a new venue.
“The
Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships has had a great home in
Topeka for 14 years, with the community providing its trademark
hospitality to our members and sponsors,” SCCA Vice President of
Rally/Solo and Special Programs Howard Duncan said. “This has allowed
us to grow the event to the point where we need a new location to
accommodate the ever increasing interest in Nationals. The Lincoln
Airpark is the best Solo site in the country and will provide us the
new home we need to make the Championships more accessible to the
growing number of SCCA Solo members.”
As is traditionally the case, the Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Finale will
precede the National Championship event at the same site.
“The
move of the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships is another step
in the continuing growth of the world’s largest motorsports
championship,” Tire Rack Vice President Matt Edmonds said. “The
diligence that the SCCA staff has shown in selecting this site truly
demonstrates their commitment to maintain the great level of
competition that every participant has come to expect, even as this
program grows to the next level.”
The Lincoln Airpark offers
35.6 acres of concrete for course layouts, 5.7 acres of grid space and
16.9 acres of paddock space. In all, the site more than doubles in
size. Moving to the Lincoln Airpark marks a return to concrete for the
both events, after three years on Heartland Park’s asphalt Solo pad.
Runoffs to Road America in 2009
5/12/08 – TOPEKA, Kan. – Sports
Car Club of America, Inc. announced today the results of a vote by its
Board of Directors that will move the National Championship
Runoffs® to
Road America (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) in 2009. Road America will become the
sixth venue to host the event, dating back to 1964.
The Board
directed its staff to move forward to negotiate a three-year agreement
with Road America for SCCA Club Racing’s signature event, which has
averaged over 650 participants since 2000. The Runoffs is currently in
the final year of a three-year agreement at Heartland Park Topeka, in
Topeka, Kan.
“Given the deep history the track, the town of
Elkhart Lake and SCCA enjoy, it only seems natural for the most
prestigious Club Racing event in the world to be hosted by Road
America,” SCCA President & CEO Jim Julow said. “The Board had a
difficult decision, as we had an unprecedented number of outstanding
potential hosts for the event, meaning the long term future of Club
Racing’s National Championship is very bright.”
“The SCCA has
been an integral part of our 53 year-history,” Road America President
and General Manager George Bruggenthies said. “The opportunity to
showcase our facility and our community to a nation of SCCA racers and
fans is a tremendous honor. On behalf of our board of directors and
staff, my thanks to the SCCA for their confidence. We promise to build
on the outstanding Runoffs tradition and exceed stakeholder
expectations.”
The first-ever “Interdivisional Championship,”
later referred to as the “Runoffs,” was held at Riverside Raceway
(Riverside, Calif.) in 1964, and alternated coasts with Daytona
International Raceway (Daytona Beach, Fla.) through 1969. In 1970, the
event began a 24-year run at Road Atlanta (Braselton, Ga.), before
moving to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Lexington, Ohio) in 1994. After
12 years in Ohio, the Runoffs moved to Heartland Park Topeka in 2006.
The move after three years signifies a change in philosophy after such
long runs at venues from the 1970s through the turn of the century.
“Club
Racing in the United States has evolved in the last decade, and
rotating the Runoffs will do nothing but help the event and the Club
Racing program, overall,” SCCA Chairman R.J. Gordy said.
“This
is by no means a reflection on the job that Raymond Irwin and his staff
have done at Heartland Park Topeka,” Julow added. “In the last four
years, they have met every challenge and request and built a tremendous
facility that is worthy of potentially hosting not only the Runoffs,
but other high-profile road racing events in the future. Additionally,
the local community and business groups have been outstanding and we
thank them for their continued support.”
The event has grown in
both size and stature over the years, with approximately 700 of the
nation’s best amateur race drivers from across the country making the
annual trek for the event that spans an entire week, preceded by
additional days of optional testing. The sheer number of competitors
makes the Runoffs the largest annual amateur road racing event in the
world, and results in an average local economic impact approaching $10
million each year.
The Runoffs annually crown the National
Champions of SCCA Club Racing’s National level classes (currently 25)
and has been referred to as the “Olympics” of motorsports. Drivers from
across North America race locally to earn points, with the top-10
qualifying drivers from the nine SCCA Divisions in each class earning
an invitation to compete in the event. The list of past Runoffs
Champions is a who’s who in road racing history that includes Skip
Barber, Michael Galati, Paul Newman, Bobby Rahal, Graham Rahal, Greg
Ray, Boris Said and Scott Sharp.
Road America’s history dates
back to the early 1950s when public street races in the Elkhart Lake
area were a part of the SCCA national championship series. When street
racing became illegal in 1952, participants and supporters joined
efforts and raised funds to develop Road America. The track held its
first event, the SCCA National, on September 10-11, 1955. The inaugural
June Sprints® was held the following year, June 23-24, 1956. Today,
the
14-turn, 4.048-mile track holds its original configuration and
continues to challenge the world’s best two- and four-wheel racers.
The date for the 2009 event has yet to be finalized, although it will
move from October to September.
The 45th SCCA National Championship Runoffs will be held at Heartland
Park Topeka October 6-12, 2008.

DMVR's Chuck Hemmingson Invited Into RRDC
5/01/08 – Des Moines' Chuck Hemmingson is one of twelve honorees to
be invited into membership in the prestigious
Road Racing Drivers Club as was announced today by RRDC President Bobby
Rahal. The Road Racing Drivers Club was formed in 1952 with a goal to
serve
the future of road racing by mentoring new drivers on both amateur and
professional levels. The RRDC has more than 150 active members. In
addition to members lending their expertise to up-and-coming
drivers, the Club presents three annual awards: the Phil Hill Award
during the Rolex 24 At Daytona weekend, for rendering outstanding
service to road racing; the Mark Donohue Award for personal spirit and
performance at the SCCA Runoffs; and the Bob Akin Award for “speed with
style” – passion, sportsmanship and contribution to motorsports.
Chuck gave the Subaru
Impreza brand its first SCCA Runoffs championships in 2005 and 2006,
events sandwiched between two outstanding stints in the professional
IMSA International Sedan, Firestone Firehawk and Grand-Am Koni
Challenge series. He was the 1987 SCCA VW Cup titlist, ’91-’92
International Sedan Champion, and won six Firehawk races in 61 starts
over 13 seasons, has four wins in SCCA World Challenge and was the only
non-factory driver to score a win in the former SCCA Racetrucks series,
a victory which took place at our inaugural Ruan Greater Des Moines
Grand Prix. He’s also raced ARCA and ASA stock cars, too, and in 1992
was part of an Oldsmobile Aurora Aerotech team that set 26 world
records. At Bonneville’s Salt Flats in 2001 he drove a Ford Ranger to a
record 202.434 mph. He’s now driving one of the factory Subaru
Imprezas in the Koni Challenge where he and co-driver won at Mid-Ohio
and Lime Rock in the brand’s rookie season.
SCCA's Top Honor to DMVR's Ron Sharp
2/12/08 – The
Woolf Barnato Award is the SCCA’s
highest National award, and is presented to the member who has made the
most
outstanding long-term contribution to the club. Winners are nominated
by the last
three recipients and approved by the Board of Directors. Previous
winners include Briggs Cunningham, General Curtis LeMay, Mark Donahue,
Carl Haas, and most recently Pete Hylton. We are very proud to announce
that the well
deserved 2007 recipient of this award is Des Moines Valley Region's Ron
Sharp. Ron and his wife Jean have been key members of our region for
over 40 years as workers, racers, rallyists, and board members. Ron's
expert job as race director of the Ruan Greater Des Moines Grand Prix
led to his taking the same position for the SCCA's annual Runoffs where
he again excelled. Ron and Jean now spend much of the season travelling
as Ron lends his race management expertise to top events across the
country although they still retain their home here in Des Moines, the
site of many memorable annual meeting after parties! We are very
gratified to have these wonderful people as DMVR members and are very
proud that the SCCA has chosen to recognize Ron's contributions with
this top award.
